Choose Your Mermaid Coloring Page

Start with a scene you enjoy, then look at how much detail you want to color. Large, open shapes suit a short activity. Smaller scales, flowing strands of hair and winding sea plants offer more areas to explore.

What you want to colorDesigns to look for
Simple shapesA mermaid waving from a rock or holding a heart
Everyday momentsReading a book, eating watermelon or building a sandcastle
Ocean friendsAn octopus, turtle, dolphin or other sea creatures
More detailPatterned tails, flowing hair and winding sea vines
Fantasy charactersMermaid royalty, fairies and animal-mermaid designs
Your own patternsBlank tails, outlines and mermaid templates

The heart-holding picture gives you a large space for a pattern or a short message. The sandcastle scene has separate areas for the towers, bucket and shovel. If you enjoy repeating patterns, choose a scaled tail and change shades from one row to the next.

Download a PDF or Color Online

To color on paper, choose a sketch and use its PDF Download link. Open the file and check the print preview before printing.

To work on a screen, select Color Online beneath the picture. Choose a color, fill an area and zoom in when you reach smaller details. Use undo whenever you want to try a different shade.

The online tool also lets you save a finished picture as a PDF or an image file, so you can keep both a blank drawing and a colored version.

Printing on A4 or US Letter

Choose A4 for your A4 paper or US Letter for Letter-sized paper when exporting through the online tool. Both options are available.

In your printer settings:

  • Match the paper size to the sheets loaded in the printer.
  • Check that the full tail, hair and surrounding objects appear in the preview.
  • Select β€œFit” or β€œFit to printable area” if any outlines would be cut off.
  • Print one page first before making several copies.

Ordinary printer paper works well for crayons and colored pencils. If you use markers, place a spare sheet underneath to help protect the surface below.

Mermaid Color Ideas to Try

A mermaid does not need a green tail or any particular hair color. Choose a combination that fits your picture, then repeat a few shades across the scene.

Color combinationWhere to use it
Teal, lavender and creamTail, hair accessories and shells
Coral pink, peach and turquoiseFins, seashells and water
Navy, violet and pale blueDeep-water scenes and dramatic tails
Mint, yellow and soft pinkSimple characters and cheerful beach scenes
Green, brown and sandy goldSea plants, rocks and sandcastles

For the watermelon picture, try red or pink fruit with a green rind, then choose a different tail color so the two stand apart. In the reading scene, give the book covers different shades. Around the winding sea vines, alternate light and dark greens to separate overlapping leaves.

On the blank-tail template, add your own scallops, stripes or dots. You can also leave parts of the fins white to create highlights.

Easy Activities With Your Finished Pictures

Make an Underwater Collage

Color a mermaid, then cut around the outside with adult help where needed. Attach the character to blue paper and add paper seaweed, shells and bubbles. Arrange the pieces before gluing so the tail remains visible.

Turn a Picture Into a Greeting Card

Print a design at a smaller size and attach it to folded card. Use the heart-holding mermaid for a friendly message, or choose a scene that reminds you of the person receiving it. Write your note inside.

Put Together a Coloring Book

Select a few different scenes and add a handmade cover. Mix simpler outlines with detailed pictures, then staple the pages or keep them in a folder. Leave a blank page at the end for your own mermaid drawing.

Write a Short Ocean Story

Choose one finished picture and decide what happens next. What book is the mermaid reading? Is the octopus visiting or asking for help? Write a few sentences beside the picture or on the back.

After coloring the mermaid and octopus scene, learn about octopuses and their relatives with Smithsonian Ocean. Choose one detail you discover to inspire your next underwater drawing.

Mermaid Coloring Pages FAQs

Are these mermaid coloring pages free to download?

Yes. Use the free PDF download links beneath the sketches to save the pictures you want to color.

Can I color a mermaid picture online?

Yes. Select the picture’s Color Online button to open it in your browser. You do not need to install an app or create an account.

Which pages are good for younger children?

Look for large shapes, clear outlines and fewer small details. The waving mermaid and heart-holding character are useful starting points. Let the child choose a scene that interests them.

Are there detailed designs for adults?

Yes. Designs with winding sea vines, flowing hair and patterned tails offer more small areas to color. You can also add your own details to the simpler templates.

How can I use a blank mermaid tail template?

Draw your own scales, fin patterns or decorations inside the outline. Try a repeating design, or divide the tail into sections to test different color combinations.

Do I need to color online before downloading a page?

No. You can download a blank picture and color it by hand. Online coloring is an optional way to work with the sketches.
